Discover the Bessa Valley vineyards
History of a renaissance...
Bulgaria is one of the world's oldest winegrowing regions and its wines have long been praised. Unfortunately, a law voted during the Gorbachev period called for uprooting the country's vines.
However, the enormous potential of Bulgaria's clay-limestone soil and continental climate is beginning to be realized once again, and a veritable rennaissance is taking place.
Stephan von Neipperg, in conjunction Dr Karl-Heinz Hauptmann, was one of the first people to invest in Bulgaria. This was in the Bessa Valley, in the Pazardjik region, 135 km southeast of Sofia. This project receives financial suport from a European community reconstruction programme.
Seeing as the vineyard had not produced wine for over 20 ans, the village inhabitants were moved to the point of tears at the inauguration on 20/05/2005.
Premium Bordeaux grape varieties were planted. This will soon be followed by local varieites. Viticulture and winemaking benefit from the considerable experience and expertise of Stephan von Neipperg. His strong commitment (regular visits, participation in the blending proceess, etc.) has been richly rewarded by wines of great finesse.
These wines, ENIRA and ENIRA Réserva, have met with enormous success.
In May 2006, ENIRA was named Bulgaria's best wine.
